The Shadchan of a Room: Using a Concept to Tie a Space Together

So what is a shadchan of a room?

A shadchan combines and connects the loose ends in a space. It is, in fact, the concept of a room.

How do you use a concept?

It could be almost anything — a piece of furniture, or a piece of art that makes enough of a statement and carries all the shades and elements of the room.

Let's see how artwork can be used as the concept of a space. I'll let you in on how I've used artwork in several projects to complete a room's appearance.

Purple in a black and white bathroom

This sharp black and white bathroom has a band of retro tiles along the floor, continuing up the wall behind the toilet, edged with chrome profiles. Beautiful in its sophistication — but we wanted to accessorise it by introducing a new colour. Purple was chosen, to give the warmth that was lacking.

Have you thought about putting artwork in a bathroom? Why not? We ordered an abstract hand-painted field of purple flowers and framed it in black high gloss to coordinate with the black glass sink already there. That oil painting did the magic we needed.

Painting into the artwork

This guest suite is accented in blue. Being a basement apartment, I felt it necessary to add a relaxing scenic view through artwork, so I picked up a refreshing printed canvas. It lacked the accent blue that was in the room — so out came my paintbrush, I gently added some strokes, and hey presto: the concept of the room had been created.

Designing an entire bedroom around one pair of paintings

Have a look at this awesome pair of artworks. I loved the design so much that I based the whole bedroom around it.

At one end of this large master bedroom is a velvet dusty pink headboard with matching throw pillows; at the other, majestic dark brown-black cabinets trimmed with gold profiles. With trending black and gold light fixtures and a paintbrush-stroked wallpaper, the stage was set for these magnificent, almost spa-like paintings.

Placed centrally in the room, they tie up the palette — the pink shades from one side, and the black areas gilded with gold leaf for an opulent touch.
